The People’s State of the Union at the PP

Wordier Than Thou is excited to be a part of the Pinellas Arts Village, a fast-growing creative arts district in the heart of Pinellas County.

This monthly community event features art openings, artful activities, music, food, literature and more!

This month, Wordier will host a People’s State of the Union story circle and story gathering event from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wordier Than Thou Literary Salon, 5741 75th Ave. N.

Cole Bellamy, writer/photographer/activist/blogger, will ask art walk attendees who stop by the literary salon to reflect on the past year.

This is a national movement to gather stories from a variety of individuals and communities.

In January of most years, the President delivers a State of the Union Address highlighting the past year and suggesting priorities for the coming year. In a year that’s seen more polarizing slogans and soundbites, more demonstrations, and more heated debates than ever, looking each other in the eye and sharing our stories matters even more than usual. In such moments, being able to cross political divides and remain in dialogue is a worthy challenge. Who are we? What touches our hearts and minds? What do our communities need, and what do they need to hear from us? We may know our own answers, but do we know each other?

The People’s State of the Union is an invitation to gather together host a national conversation in our own homes, schools, houses of worship, and community spaces. From 5 to 7 p.m. during the February art walk, Wordier will host a story circle to collect a body of stories that can be searched and shared, inspiring new ideas and new actions. This repository of stories will also provide the source material for the Poetic Address to the Nation, collaboratively composed and performed by poets from across the country.

Share a story about an experience that gave you insight into the state of our union.

Share a story about a time you felt a sense of belonging—or the opposite—to this nation or your community.

Share a story of an experience that gave you hope in the past year.

Mary Ellen DiPietra and Richard DiPietra will also run the Wordier space from 4 to 8 p.m., so used books of all genres – sci fi, horror, history, literary fiction, history, spirituality, memoirs, poetry, drama and more – will be available to purchase. We also have a large collection of new books by Florida authors. Book purchases are cash only.
