OPEN Network Partner Event – The (R)evolution of Indigenous Food Systems with Chef Sean Sherman
Sean Sherman (Oglala Lakota) is founder of The Sioux Chef and a leader in the movement to revitalize Native American cuisine for a modern culinary context.
Foraging in the countryside is like a spiritual return to a time when Native Americans lived on the plants and animals that grew wild across a country that was theirs. His forage-to-table approach is also re-educating people to the flavors and healthy natural foods that don’t contribute to diabetes, obesity and heart disease, unlike the health challenges our modern “colonized” diet has produced. Sherman is on a mission to celebrate and showcase native cuisine and give the past, a future.
His book, The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen, earned a 2018 James Beard Award and was named a top 10 cookbook of 2017 by NPR, The Village Voice, Smithsonian Magazine, the Los Angeles Times and others.
Join Chef Sherman for an engaging discussion about his life and work at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art, followed by a book signing.

The Sioux Chef Cooking Class (SOLD OUT!)
Later that same Saturday, The James Museum is providing another unique opportunity; to work side-by-side in the kitchen with Chef Sean Sherman himself.
They’re hosting a special cooking class where you can learn first hand how to apply traditional Native American techniques and ingredients to modern Florida fare. Sherman will share his knowledge about indigenous food systems as he guides you through a hands-on culinary experience in the Museum’s own kitchen. It will be a true “foraged to feast” experience, as many of his ingredients will have been harvested from the wilds of St. Petersburg the day or so beforehand.
Together, participants will gather to enjoy the fruits of their labor, as they sit and enjoy a one-of-a-kind meal at the end of the evening.
Limited to 20 participants; advanced registration required.
The Sioux Chef Cooking Class (meal included) (THIS portion of the event has SOLD OUT!)
Oct. 12 @ 5-7 p.m. Tickets were $125; $100 for James Museum members
