Pinellas 4-H O.M.G National Youth Science Day – Coding Your World

We use codes to communicate without realizing it. Numbers and alphabets are codes. Maps use a code of symbols to identify locations. Emoticons convey emotions, and texting shorthand makes writing faster. Understanding the language of codes helps improve communication in many aspects of life.

This year’s 4-H STEM challenge, youth will answer the driving question:

How do codes affect our lives and the ways we communicate?

Youth will:

1. Analyze what codes are and why people use them to communicate

2. Interpret common symbols and images

3. Describe how the different ways people communicate can help them understand each other

4. Analyze the role codes and symbols have in forms of communication such as the arts, science, mathematics and computer science.

Code Your World computer science (CS) challenge will teach kids to apply computer science to the world around them through hands-on activities.

Code Your World uses games and hands-on fun to teach kids important CS and computational thinking concepts, and is perfect for first-time and beginner coders ages 8-14.

Important notes about the event:

1. Make sure to bring a bag lunch for your child!

2. Parents may drop off child, but MUST sign-in and sign them out.

3. We will provide drinks and water.

4. If you would like to stay and help or watch, please RSVP and contact Mr. Sandy Hernandez (Mr. H), the interim 4-H agent at shernandez2@pinellascounty.org to confirm.

5. We will be holding a 4-H EMOJI Design contest as well. Youth will be encourage to design a special EMOJI logo for Pinellas County 4-H. The winner will receive 4-H SWAG. For details please contact Mr. H at shernandez2@pinellascounty.org .
