Business and the Economy, Explained

October 9, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$25 – $100
Since the U.S. recovery from the Great Recession, it is apparent that some of our core premises about the American economy won’t hold into the 21st century. Presumptions about taxes and tariffs are proving to play out in ways that even mainstream economists couldn’t have predicted.

In the past year alone, the U.S. stock market reached all-time highs and then experienced its biggest one-day drop ever. The U.S. government passed a major tax reform bill for the first time in 30 years. Pulling out of multilateral trade agreements and escalating economic punishments on countries like China sparked serious conversations of trade wars. The unemployment rate is low, but 40 percent of U.S. households are struggling to sustain a middle-class lifestyle.

What’s really going on with the economy in America? What’s coming next? How will this affect U.S. business in the future?

This Business & the Economy, Explained community conversation will help you explore these consequential questions, with insights from a highly respected journalist:

  • Ali Velshi, Senior Economic and Business Correspondent, NBC News

This conversation will be moderated by Indira Lakshmanan, the Newmark Chair for Journalism Ethics at Poynter.

Velshi co-hosts the lively Velshi & Ruhle business show on MSNBC. He’s known for focusing on issues that closely affect Americans, turning “boring” business topics into engaging and exciting discussions.
